Brain Foods

growthology.com
It's exam week which is a very crucial time for you to get your head in the game!  One of the best things you can do for yourself this week is to make sure you are eating the right foods to help give you energy and fuel your brain!

  • Berries such as blueberries, raspberries and strawberries are full of Vitamin C and antioxidants which have been shown to enhance brain performance, improve memory, and may act as a defense against dementia and Alzheimer's.
  • Salmon and walnuts are packed with omega-3 fatty acids which are essential for brain function and development, and may play a vital role in enhancing memory.
  • Whole grain breads, pastas, oatmeal and brown rice help stabilize blood sugars, aid in blood flow and move toxins out of the digestive track.  Carbohydrates are also an excellent source of fuel for the brain because they are your body's preferred energy source.
  • Nuts and seeds are good sources of Vitamin E, an antioxidant associated with less cognitive decline.
  • Leafy green vegetables like spinach, kale and cabbage contain Vitamin B12, B6, folic acid and iron which help support memory function.
  • Eggs contain Vitamin B12 and lecithin which help fight degeneration of the brain.  They also contain choline, a building block of brain cells that contribute to memory function.
  • Dark chocolate is a good source of antioxidants called flavonols and caffeine which can increase blood flow to the brain, and enhance focus and concentration.
A great way to incorporate some of these wonderful brain foods is to make your own trail mix - cereal, granola, pretzels, peanuts, almonds, pistachios, walnuts, dark chocolate chips, raisins and other dried fruit!  Trail mix can be great for breakfast or snacking on-the-go, and during or in between studying.

Get creative with your trail mix!  What other foods do you like to put into your mix?
