Manage Your Stress

collegecures.com

Stress is definitely a part of being a college student, and can be especially present around exam time!  Here are a few thoughts on how to deal with stress when it comes:

  • Eat balanced and healthy.  Don't turn to desserts and junk food when you're stressed!  Fruits and veggies, whole grains, and good sources of protein like low-fat dairy products, nuts and seeds, and lean meats will help keep you focused and help maintain your energy levels.  Also, be sure to eat every 2-4 hours to keep you going!
  • Exercise!  Even if you only have 20-30 minutes to spare, taking a walk, working out at the gym, or going for a bike ride can help you reduce stress and refocus.
  • Don't overdo it on caffeine!  Too much caffeine can make you feel irritable and jittery, and can cause your heart to race.  An appropraite amount of caffeine is 200mg, the equirvalent of two cups of coffee every day.
  • Find a few minutes each day to be alone and quite - no crowds, technology (yes, that include iPhones), or noise.  Just rest and reflect.
  • Take time for friends.  Having a bit of social time can do wonders to relax!  Grab coffee or lunch with a friend, watch a movie, or go to an event together... then, get back to studying!
  • SLEEP!!!  Never underestimate the importance of sleeping enough to help with stress!  More sleep helps your mind recharge and rebalance.  It isn't easy, especially during exam time, but allow yourself a night to go to bed early or take a power nap!  Try to shoot for 7-8 hours.
  • Study in a group setting.  If this doesn't distract you too much, studying with a group can help you to cover more material, and make studying a bit more fun - big stress reducers.
  • Make lists.  Write down all the different things you want to accomplish.  This will clear your mind and as you check items off the list, you'll feel a sense of control and accomplishment.
  • Talk it out.  If you are facing serious stress, or struggling through a difficult issue, don't hesitate to talk with a close friend or mentor, or schedule a meeting with a professional counselor.  You're not alone, so find strength in others who are there to help you!  UNC Campus Health Services: 919.966.2281.
  • Keep focused.  Remember to study and that the reason you're in college is to pursue your education.  In the midst of all the business, prioritize your academics!
